LA MESA, Calif. – Drivers in East County were finding a slow commute Wednesday morning after a truck swerved, hit a guardrail and then dumped its trailer on southbound state Route 125 just north of Spring Street.
According to a California Highway Patrol website, the driver of the truck crashed around 6:06 a.m. when he lost control after apparently swerving to avoid something on the freeway.
The truck’s shipping container detached and overturned, blocking the right two lanes of the freeway, the CHP said. The impact knocked down freeway walls, sent debris across lanes and possibly damaged a bridge, San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
A traffic alert was issued and traffic is very slow in the area in both directions of SR-125, said CHP Officer Tommy Doerr.
A Caltrans bridge inspector was sent to inspect the damage and has asked that Panorama Drive, a street that runs under the freeway, be closed for now.
