LA MESA, Calif. — A car hit a gas line in La Mesa, causing a gas leak and several homes and businesses in the area to be evacuated.
The incident happened around 3:20 p.m. on the 7800 block of Quince Street near Lee and University avenues. Ten homes and the Helix Water District headquarters were evacuated.
“They said it was an emergency evacuation and everybody had to leave,” said resident Sherman Rutledge.
According to Heartland Fire Department Spokesperson Mark Casey, it appears the driver of a black Honda Accord did not use the parking brake, causing a black Honda Accord to roll down its driveway, across the street and onto the gas line.
By six o’clock residents were allowed back into their homes.
San Diego Gas and Electric crews finished repairs around 8 p.m.
