A man in his mid-40s died while trying to get to a safe place after crashing with a deer on a freeway in Bonita Tuesday. The man was driving on northbound State Route 125 just south of SR-52 –possibly on his way home from the gym and on his way to work — when he collided with a deer sometime before 4:45 a.m., California Highway Patrol (CHP) Sgt. Steve Jio said. The deer was killed and the car became immobilized in the middle of the roadway. The man may have then attempted to get out of the roadway, CHP said.”It appears he jumped over the side of the bridge maybe to get into a safe location, didn’t realize that there was a 40-foot drop,” Sgt. Jio said. The man was killed in the fall. “At this time of the day, it was pitch dark out here so he couldn’t have seen over the side,” Jio said. CHP said the driver appeared to be wearing workout clothes and a lunch pail was spotted in the vehicle. A SigAlert issued at about 5:15 a.m. closed at least one lane of northbound SR-125 so CHP could investigate the crash. Heavy traffic backup could be seen on the freeway before the alert was lifted at about 6:40 a.m. No other information was available.
