Man tied to OB murder shot by police in La Mesa

LA MESA, Calif. —  A police officer shot and wounded a man who was allegedly trespassing at a home in La Mesa Thursday morning.
Police later confirmed the man was 36-year-old Daniel Chase McKibben — a “person of interest” in a murder that prompted two separate SWAT responses in Ocean Beach Wednesday.
In that case, McKibben’s brother spotted him running from their mother’s home after she sent concerning messages to family members, police said. A woman was found dead at the home a short time later, though officials never confirmed whether the victim was the brothers’ mom.
Officers searched the area for McKibben throughout the day but he had not been found until the shooting, which happened around 9:20 a.m. Thursday on Rainey Street, near Samuel Street in La Mesa.
According to La Mesa Police, they received a call about a trespasser and the homeowner wanted him removed. When officers arrived, they found McKibben inside the home with a knife.  One of the officers fired 3 shots, hitting McKibben in the hand and shoulder, La Mesa police Lt. Brian Stoney said.  He was arrested and taken to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to survive, Stoney added. The homeowner was not injured.
Police did not immediately clarify how McKibben was connected to the family in La Mesa.
Amber Klassen is the daughter of the homeowner. She said her brother is bipolar and occasionally brings homeless people to her dad’s home without permission. Her father had no idea McKibben was at the house until Thursday morning. “He was in the living room on the couch and my Dad said, ‘You have to get out. (McKibben) said he wasn’t leaving,” Klassen told FOX 5.
Yvette Rodarte lives in the area and was shocked to learn a shooting happened in her neighborhood.
“Oh my God, you never see this,” said Rodarte. “This is abnormal. You never see that in this area.”
La Mesa police are asking the public to avoid the area while they continue to investigate.
