Some South Bay Beaches Reopen After Contamination Closure

A portion of the South San Diego shoreline was reopened Wednesday after heavy rains over the weekend prompted health officials to close several beaches due to sewage-contaminated runoff. The County Department of Environmental Health closed the Silver Strand, Coronado and Imperial Beach shorelines from the International Border through Coronado due to contaminated flows from the Tijuana River into San Diego County beaches. The increase in runoff was attributed to heavy rainfall over the weekend. On Wednesday, health officials confirmed that water quality testing along the Silver Strand and Coronado shorelines met state health standards and could be reopened to the public. The stretch of beach from the U.S.-Mexico border to north Imperial Beach remained closed until sampling confirms the water is safe for recreational use, DEH said. Signs warning of sewage-contaminated water will remain in place in the meantime.Water closures are often issued near the border after rainfall due to contamination from the Tijuana River flowing north. Another bout of storms is expected this week.
