St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center is gearing up for its 10th Annual Tea by the Sea at the Marine Room in La Jolla on Jan. 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s honorary chairs are Maureen King, Barbara Menard, and Angel Kleinbub.
The event benefits Sophie’s Gallery art program located in downtown El Cajon which serves more than 400 adult students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
SMSC CEO Debra Emerson said this event has music and great food, and a silent auction.
“One of our artists will also speak,” she said “The venue is awesome. This is one of our first events of this year fundraising for our art program, which is a great program for our students and the community because we support outside artists too. It has all the components of being a great event. The ocean view, hors d’oeuvres, we have a special drink, music, which makes it a fun event.”
Tea by the Sea is open to both ladies and gentlemen and are encouraged to dress in their favorite tea-time attire.

St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center is a nonprofit organization in El Cajon, that educates and empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to realize their full potential. Founded in 1966 by the Society of the Sacred Heart, the Center first focused on pre-school children with developmental disabilities. When public schools began to assume that role in the early 1970s, SMSC shifted its focus to adults with developmental disabilities.
Today, SMSC provides work training and social experiences that encourage students to become well-rounded, contributing members of the greater community.
