The city of La Mesa is gearing up for its annual Earth Day Fair at MacArthur Park on April 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Headed by the La Mesa Park & Recreation Foundation in partnership with the city, the venue is perfect for plenty of room for well-spaced booths, kids’ zone, Arbor Day activities, STEM projects, bicycle activities, vehicle displays, food trucks and more. With the event quickly approaching, organizers are still looking for vendors, volunteers, and sponsors to make this event a success.
La Mesa Park & Recreation Foundation Executive Director Misty Thompson said volunteers are one of the larges pieces in putting this event together.
“Volunteers are necessary for many activities, set ups and break downs,” she said. “This year we have extended it to a four-hour event, so we will need more people working in the kids’ zone. Last year we had 12 different stations in the kids’ zone, so volunteers are extremely important in anything that we do.”
Thompson said it values its sponsors because without funds it cannot put on these types of events. She said so far, it has some sponsors this year and doing fairly well on sponsors funding the event, and now they are pushing for more vendors to attend the event this year.
“Vendors are community members, organizations, or anybody who can come out and offer an environmentally product, service, or activity,” she said. “We have vendors that come out and demonstrate electric landscape tools. Or someone will come out for the kids and teach them about the environment, even if it is an activity on turning a pinecone into a bird feeder or teaching them how to recycle. Anybody who has a service or activity that they would like to share, and at times, that is what we are looking for. Having this type of community that raises awareness for our younger generation as well as residents on environmental issues, the goal is to help them to take action and make sustainable choices in their lives. Our goal is to have them come here, have fun, enjoy the day, get some resources and learn more about environmental issues.”
Thompson said any given year it has 40 to 50 vendors and are hoping to increase that number this year.
